If you are interested in the subject of art history itself, I would personally recommend Fernie's Art History and its Methods: A Critical Anthology and D'Alleva's Methods and Theories of Art History both of which are fairly accessible. For more specific artists and periods I can generally recommend Thames & Hudson's World of Art.
